With its immaculate production and knack for capturing and holding your attention as one song transitioned seamlessly into another, it was a shining example of how metalcore could be elevated to that next level – in ways that were neither generic nor derivative. As the progressive metal merchants circumnavigated their own route around the expected sonic and lyrical tenets of the genre, finding that balance between the crushingly heavy and the headily atmospheric, subsequent albums were powered by cerebral, immersive soundscapes, littered with monumental riffs and intoxicating melodies.
