SUR AUSTRU
Obârşie
Negura Bunget alumni head back into the Transylvanian wilds
AVANTGARDE MUSIC
Folk/black metal outfit Sur Austru are the spiritual successor to Neguraă Bunget, formed after the untimely loss of Negru in 2017. Vocalist/guitarist Tibor Kati, bassist Ovidiu Korodan and traditional instrumentalist Petrică Ionuţescu continue the adventure into the Carpathian wilderness, Obârşise telling the story of the Solomonari – weather-wielding wizards in Romanian folklore. Cel Din Urmaă is a clarion call, its pensive chugging and spirited flutes flourishing in rousing solemnity. The bewitching folk instrumental Codru Moma flows into the spirited Cant Adânc, with tremolopicked guitars, traditional instruments and rousing choral backing vocals drawing you into the fairytale. Sur Austru offer a more on-the-nose combination of folk and black metal than Neguraă Bunget, but there’s plenty of time for their musical tendrils to further intertwine. Obârşie offers spellbinding forays into the wild – and muchneeded escapism.
