NIGHTFALL
At Night We Prey
Gothic metallers reclaim their place at the Greek vanguard
SEASON OF MIST
Alongside Rotting Christ and Septicflesh, Nightfall are part of Greek metal’s unholy trinity. Their prolific nature and timely death-doom/gothic metal hybrid made them a fixture of the Mediterranean underground in the 90s. However, hiatuses since have dismantled their momentum. This is their first album in eight years, reuniting founders Efthimis Karadimas and Michalis Galiatsos. Despite lead single Darkness Forever initially planting fears of unadventurous death metal fare, the full-length is a mutating beast unafraid to explore the extremes of its genres. Slow doom chords regularly break down into exhilarating OSDM riffs at the drop of a hat, and operatic guest singers Eleni and Souzana Vougioukli emulate Cradle Of Filth’s most sorrowful melodies. If it doesn’t take another eight years to follow up, At Night We Prey should commence Nightfall’s deserved comeback.
