GNOME CINEMA
THE Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, when not creating mega-hits for Marvel at the cinema, have specialised in taking streamers for an expensive ride with content that falls flat on the small screen.
Their most recent, The Electric State, is Netflix’s most expensive film ($320m). But it disappeared from its movie top-ten list within a couple of weeks. Prior to that the brothers delivered moderately priced wannabe-Scorsese crime drama Cherry, for Apple TV+; the $200m The Gray Man, Ryan Gosling’s hitman travelling the globe to perform unconvincing blue-screen action sequences for Netflix; and the $300m Citadel (six episodes) for Amazon. The Electric State looks like another example of the Russos struggling without Marvel’s guiding hand.
