THE Border Security Expo bills itself as “the largest and longest-standing event of its kind, designed specifically for the border community”. This year’s Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, featured exhibitor stands for body armour makers, perimeter fencing providers, and, somewhat unexpectedly, M&C Saatchi. At the end of the first night, there was a “southwest soirée”, where the dress code was “business casual, or boots and jeans”.
Clearly, there’s money to be made in the detention and deportation business. “We need to get better at treating this like a business,” Todd Lyons, acting head of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told the Expo audience, “like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings.”
