CONSTRUCTION SAFETY
Crane reaction
NEARLY half a decade after police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) began investigating how a mechanical crane fell on to a house in Bow, east London, killing an elderly resident, no one has been held to account over the incident. Nor has any lesson for the construction industry been forthcoming.
The crane, from a nearby building site, fell on to the home of Jacqueline Atkinson, her son Sam and her aunt June Harvey, 85, in July 2020. June was killed when the 27-metre machine crashed through the roof, crushing the upstairs rooms. Through no fault of their own, Jacqueline and Sam also lost their home and most of their possessions.
