Postcard from Taipei
SOMETIMES, stopping at a sushi restaurant when walking down the back streets of Zhongzheng, it feels more like Tokyo than Taipei. You come across a great fondness for Japan here in Taiwan, a curious reflection of geography and history. Our island may only be a hundred miles from the Chinese mainland, but Japan is our far from unloved former colonial power.
Foreign friends tend to focus on Beijing’s desire to take control of Taiwan, by force if necessary. But quietly, our old relationship with Japan is getting more and more important.
