AMONG the panellists of a fringe event held by oil and gas industry lobby group Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) at the Lib Dem party conference was Professor Matthew Agarwala, an academic at the University of Sussex who specialises in sustainable finance. At the event, Agarwala explained how renewables can reduce energy costs and detailed why UK oil and gas production does not reduce British energy prices, arguing: “The idea that North Sea oil and gas producers will give UK households a ‘locals discount’ is at best a myth, and at worst a lie. Like every other profit-driven business, they will sell to the highest bidder. Pretending anything else is foolish.”
