VICTORIA TRAWLS
n LAST month the Daily Mail credited author Eden Collinsworth with rediscovering the suffragist Victoria Woodhull, who ran for US president in 1872 and whose “story has mainly been lost to history until now”.
In a breathless puff piece for the new biography The Improbable Victoria Woodhull, the Mail revealed: “Collinsworth herself had no idea Woodhull existed until she was invited to explore the British Museum’s Reading Room.” There she “stumbled across a folder titled Woodhull vs British Museum”, detailing a legal case in which Woodhull sued the museum for libel for holding defamatory texts about her in its library.
