HUMMINGBIRD SAL AMANDER
Climate of fear
Ecological concerns run throughout all Jeff VanderMeer’s novels, but they’re very much to the fore in Hummingbird Salamander, a pitch black eco-thriller set in the Pacific Northwest of the US.
Jane Smith (not her real name, which she keeps secret to protect her family) is a security analyst working in IT. She’s paranoid enough to keep a bug-out bag ready at all times, and this proves justified when an old friend goes missing. Silvina is the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, and as “Jane” starts to investigate what happened to her, she finds herself stalked, shot at and pulled ever further into a world of shady corporate wrongdoing and possible bioterrorism.
