Two nations hang in the balance in the first of CL Clark’s fantasy series set in Qazal, a colonised city of the Balladairan Empire. Clark’s dual heroines are a study in opposites. Touraine is a lieutenant in a unit composed of Qazali conscripts forcibly taken to Balladaire as children and raised as soldiers.
