THE FINAL FRONTIER
The vehicle stunt coordinator behind some of the Bond franchise’s most thrilling sequences
REMY JULIENNE 1930–2021
GETTY
A specialist in movie stunt driving and vehicular acrobatics, Rémy Julienne made his name with The Italian Job (1969), orchestrating the memorable sequence that raced a fleet of Mini Coopers through Turin. He went on to bring his showstopping skills and precise scientific eye to the Bond franchise, making imaginative use of unexpected vehicles: a humble Citroen 2CV in For Your Eyes Only (1981), three-wheeled taxis in Octopussy (1983) and San Francisco fire trucks in A View To A Kill (1985). Licence To Kill (1989) saw him at his most audacious, performing wheelies with giant Kenworth trucks. “I was a scared little boy but I had a taste for risk,” he recalled in 2015. “Over time I discovered the real difficulty is finding the right balance between doubt and self-confidence.”
