The Dark Knight Returns
Simon Spurrier on going over to the dark side at Marvel with Black Knight and Way Of X
They are Groot. Or are they? (No, they’re not.)
HOT OFF AN ACCLAIMED BUT short-lived stint on DC’s Hellblazer, Simon Spurrier has now set his sights on Marvel’s Arthurian Avenger, Dane Whitman aka Black Knight. With the character set to be brought to life on the big screen by Kit Harington in the upcoming Eternals, The Curse Of The Ebony Blade explores how Whitman’s predicament stems from his own dark nature and not his malignant sword.
“The simplest way to describe it is that he’s been revealed as a sort of antithesis to the Thor archetype,” explains Spurrier, who is joined on the five-parter by artist Sergio Davila. “He has this remarkable weapon, but rather than responding only to a wielder deemed worthy, the Ebony Blade is at its most potent when Dane is in the grip of negative emotional traits like anger, sadness, bitterness and rage. All these years, he’s assumed that the sword is this cursed artefact which hungers for blood and violence, when in fact it’s just the catalyst for his own dysfunction.”
