ROUND UP
Is CRIMEWAVE (Blu-ray, out now) a horrorcomedy? Some critics tag it as such, but we’re not entirely convinced. This 1986 collaboration by Sam Raimi and the Coen Brothers follows a nebbish and his dream girl as they’re pursued by a duo of crazed hitmen/ exterminators, and is a Looney Tunes cartoon brought to life. The climactic fight across/on top of moving vehicles particularly impresses – just don’t expect complex plotting. One-time Heroes speedster Brea Grant both wrote and stars in home-invasion horror LUCKY (Shudder, out now), as a woman attacked by a masked maniac every night (repeatedly killing him), who’s baffled to find everyone’s blasé about it. Cleverly making use of Groundhog Day/slasher tropes, it works rather well as an allegorical exploration of gaslighting and victim-blaming. Too brassic to buy the 2020 limited edition box set? Good news: Second Sight has brought out a regular edition of George Romero classic DAWN OF THE DEAD (4K/Blu-ray, out now). It lacks the music CDs, novelisation and book of essays which came with the original set, but still has three cuts and a disc of bonuses. We said: “The greatest zombie movie ever made? Night Of The Living Dead is arguably scarier, but there’s something about Dawn that gets under the skin.” Finally, Luke Cage fans not used to browsing Alibi for supernatural shows may like to know that season one of EVIL (featuring Mike Colter as a seminarian tasked with investigating miracles/ reports of demons) is now on DVD.
