Pasty shins on show, jam-packed pub gardens and optimistic barbecues – none of these signals the start of the great British summer quite so well as the arrival of strawberries. We Brits eat around 170,000 tonnes of strawberries a year, with Wimbledon alone taking credit for 34,000kg. Popular since Roman times, they’ve been used throughout history to treat everything from depression to sore throats and digestive ailments, for whitening teeth – even as an aphrodisiac.
