M new-model pipeline bursting with compact, affordable, funky electric cars. Having just seen the productionready version of Renault’s retro-cool 5, we also brought you news of the Tesla Model ‘2’, Fiat Panda EV and MG ‘2’, all due in showrooms before the end of 2025. Suddenly, electric car ownership was promising to get a lot more viable for a great many more people.
And, before the end of the month, with our attention focused on slightly bigger things, we crowned our favourite sub-£40,000 electric car. A panel of six judges gathered at Bicester Heritage for a back-to-back test of 12 contenders for that accolade – from the Smart #1 to the Volvo EX30, via the Vauxhall Astra Electric, BYD Dolphin, Renault Megane E-Tech and more.
