Fastest, priciest, heaviest… ILLYA VERPRAET has 2024’s road test figures
t’s Christmas and the road test gear is having a welldeserved break, I because it has been extra busy in 2024. There has been some upheaval in the world of the Autocar road test, because to coincide with the redesign of the magazine, we moved to a different venue to do our performance testing.
The shift to Horiba MIRA allowed us to (re)introduce some tests, such as wet braking, and generally revise our procedures. We also decided it would be a good idea to do more instrumented tests, which means that we ended up testing 58 cars instead of 49 this year.
Put them all together and you end up with 111 tonnes and £6,155,050 worth of test cars. With all of them fully fuelled and/or charged, you could cover 20,768 miles. Or, parked bumper to bumper, the queue would stretch for 270 metres. And no, we wouldn’t like to organise the logistics for any of those displays.
