SEASON OF MIST
Dutch avant-black metallers arise out of tragedy
Rising from the ashes of Dodecahedron after the tragic passing of frontman Michiel Eikenaar from cancer comes a project that’s slightly easier on the ear but no less bewildering. Viciously unorthodox BM and virulent angularity remain, but they’re now part of a melting pot that extends into industrial, electronica and soundtrack composition. It often seems as though parallel universes have collided to allow separate Justin Broadricks to coexist and form a black metal band informed by Godflesh, Napalm Death and Techno Animal. The talent and the scope are bamboozling, but its incessantly glitchy, difficult nature doesn’t always make for a coherent or even enjoyable listen. Be careful out there, people. ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
