SPELLJAMMER
Abyssal Trip
RIDINGEASY
Sweden’s stoner/doom trio take a sojourn amongst the stars
Five years after their debut LP, Stockholm three-piece Spelljammer are audibly in no hurry. Throbbing stretches of elephantine groove steadily unfurl with woofer-blowing, fuzzedout low-end. Slacker vocals are drenched in cosmic effects as drums plod wildly with warm spontaneity while marshalling everything firmly together. Way before the 70s horror film sample introduces the sprawling, lysergic title track, there are blurry glimpses of Electric Wizard Mk I in their brief sci-fi phase. Abyssal Trip is an entertaining return trip to the mountains of stoner space doom – although there are moments of unexpected delicacy, most distinctively on pensive guitar interlude Peregrine. No single riff volunteers itself for unforgettable status, but the journey is an enjoyable one.
