HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS
North Carolina doom crew fail to find a path out of their haze
Cosmic Reaper kneel before Electric Wizard’s sativastained Dopethrone. While their low-slung grooves, sculptured narco-doom guitar tones and clean, detached vocals buried deep in the mix tick all the usual boxes, there’s not much in the way of distinguishing stylistic characteristics. The band work best when in Witchcraft’s psych-realm (Stellar Death) or in a Kyussian haze (Wasteland I), but most of the loping riffs on this debut sound pretty lifeless for anyone devoted to this style of time-tested amplifier abuse. Plus, Thad Collis’s vocals turn from aloof to dull to pretty grating on repeat listens because of the monotony of his timbre and phrasing.
