SENYAWA
Experimental duo blend traditional Indonesian sounds with boundarypushing heaviness
WORDS: ALEX DELLER • PICTURE: PHANTOM LIMB
IT’S RARE FOR a band to sound like no one else, but Indonesian two-piece Senyawa – vocalist Rully Shabara and instrumentalist Wukir Suryadi – achieve just that. Their unique brand of experimental heaviness sounds ultramodern but also utterly timeless – the complex product of them growing that looks both up as teenage metalheads to the past and having a passion for and the future for inspiration experimenting with homemade instrumentation and the desire to blend styles, sounds and dialects in homage to their country’s extraordinarily rich and diverse culture. From a chance onstage meeting, the pair have forged a successful, storied career, and are now setting their sights on increasingly ambitious goals.
