RAIL has been used to move more than 10 million tonnes of material to and from HS2 construction sites so far, meeting a target originally anticipated to be achieved in 2030.
Working in partnership with Network Rail, freight operating companies and materials suppliers, it has taken just over two years to reach such a significant volume. HS2 Ltd now predicts that construction of Phase One of the high speed line will now account for a total of 20 million tonnes of aggregate being moved by rail, removing the need for an estimated three million lorry journeys.
The achievement was celebrated at a gathering at Tarmac’s Tunstead Quarry, near Buxton, involving freight operators, suppliers and other rail-related businesses.
