On September 1, 1984, No. 58002 was used to rescue a failed cross-country HST set. The loco is seen arriving at Exeter with the stock of the 12.10 Liverpool-Plymouth, which it had assisted from Birmingham. The 58 also had problems near Ivybridge, and one power car was coaxed into life to get the train to its destination.
COLOUR RAIL
AS a heavy freight diesel, the Class 58s only had a top speed of 80mph and no train heating, which meant their appearances on passenger trains was relatively infrequent. But that did not stop them working both service trains and railtours, and this feature recalls many of those passenger workings over their short lives.
