A NEW report has concluded that rail freight contributes £2.5 billion in economic and social benefits to the UK every year, with the highest benefits in the north of England, Wales and Scotland.
The report, prepared by Deloitte for the Rail Delivery Group, is designed to inform future decisions about how capacity is allocated. For example, an intermodal train travelling 200 miles contributes about £1.5m per year in benefits to the UK economy.
