Phase 1 is complete and Phase 2 is in progress as engineering teams tackle the reconstruction of Platforms 7-11 on the western side of the station. The more streamlined track layout for Platforms 0-6 is clearly visible as No. 700021 departs with a northbound Thameslink service on May 12. The £1.2 billion East Coast Upgrade promises to add more than 10,000 extra seats per day on trains to and from King’s Cross.
KEN BRUNT
The most high-profile part of the King’s Cross remodelling project is the reopening of the disused eastern bore of Gasworks Tunnel immediately to the north of the station. Closed since 1976, the first engineering trains ran through the bore in late March, with scheduled passenger trains returning on April 28. GBRf No. 66722 stands inside the eastern bore with an engineering train.
