WORK on laying new track foundations for the Tyne & Wear Metro’s new £70 million depot at South Gosforth in Newcastle is to start during June.
The current depot at the site is being demolished in four phases. Phase one, which began in March, involved the demolition of a section of the main building. Around a third of the old sidings have been removed in preparation for new track foundations, which will be laid by boring hollow steel tubes into the ground and filling them with concrete.
