HEALTH & SAFETY
A deadly delay
A
VOLUNTEER who was fatally crushed while working on a canal restoration project was unlawfully killed, an inquest jury has concluded.
Peter Konitzer, 62, died after the wing wall of the Top Lock in Pewsham, Wiltshire, collapsed on him in August 2016. As reported in Eye 1629, although Chippenham-based charity the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust was eventually prosecuted and fined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) last year for failing to ensure the safety of volunteers, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) refused to pursue a charge of corporate manslaughter.
