VOICE cloning technology is getting better and better. A recent clip purporting to be of US vice-president JD Vance criticising Elon Musk had millions of views and required Vance’s communications director to refute it as faked.
But new research by Consumer Reports has shown that, of the six largest text-to-audio providers, only two take any meaningful steps to combat abuse of their services. Several require only a checkbox to confirm that anyone creating a voice clone is not going to use it for nefarious purposes. Prepare for telephone scammers to become much, much better.
