BRITAIN’s longest-serving parole
“refusenik” Clive Freeman always said he was prepared to die in prison rather than admit to a murder he didn’t commit. Unless the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) gets its act together, he may have to see the promise through.
Freeman’s latest CCRC application was filed in August 2023. A year later the CCRC claimed the matter was being treated as a priority. But it was not until last week that the CCRC said it was “nearing the end” of its review, which would “likely” then pass to three commissioners for a decision. Another update is promised in June if there is still no decision – a mere 22 months after the application was made.
Eye 1592 revealed two years ago that Freeman had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Now 81, and having stopped treatment, he’s running out of time to be granted an appeal, despite evidence suggesting his case is one of the UK’s longest miscarriages of justice.
