A sorry state
Sir,
I spent nearly two decades providing round-the-clock care for my disabled daughter, saving the state hundreds of thousands of pounds. I am now dealing with my own disability (bipolar disorder, which is lifelong and incurable and impacts my life massively) and this government says I’m a burden on working people.
As a Labour party member, I was bombarded with emails from them in the run-up to the general election begging for donations, and because I was so scared of the prospect of another Tory government I donated money I could’ve spent on petrol or food or keeping my central heating on a little bit longer. I can’t begin to tell you how stupid and angry I feel.
NELLE KEELER.
Remoaner returns
Sir,
I know you keep this cartoon (EU-phemisms, Eye 1645) in to comfort the few remaining pro-Brexit types that read your organ and generally I try to ignore it for my own sanity, but can I point out that the EU being a protectionist organisation is a tired canard that has been thoroughly debunked. The EU has more free trade deals, with more countries, than anyone, has zero tariffs on the poorest nations and remaining tariffs in line with international averages. Has RGJ not noticed that the Brexiteer promise of a flood of cheap goods following our departure has by and large not happened?

Post facto
Sir,
Re “Bristol Channels” (p7, Eye 1645), as Eye readers will be aware Marvin Rees didn’t just leave office at the end of his second term as stated in the article, the position was abolished following a vote of Bristol residents. Could the abolition of the post and Rees’s conduct in that post immediately prior be related? Keep up the good work.
ALEX HITTER, Ipswich.
Not to be sniffed at
Sir,
Your correspondent Ramsay Hodgson stated that the NHS “worryingly” prescribes ketamine and cocaine (“Drug lords”, Letters, Eye 1644). I’m not sure why this is worrying given the proven benefits of the compounds for patients, often with terminal illness. Surely any drug which can ease suffering as patients face end of life care should be used. Just because a hairy-faced ne’er do well chooses to misuse a drug, doesn’t make the drug bad. Sniff sniff.

Ideal Olympian?
Sir,
I was pleased to see your tipster for the new International Olympic Committee presidency (“The chosen Juan?”, p41, Eye 1644) at least gave a name-check to the actual winner [Kirsty Coventry]. Luckily I’m not a betting man.

Rolin
Putin
Sir,
Leafing through an album of Flemish artist Jan van Eyck’s masterpieces, I was struck by the similarity of his 1435 portrait of Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, to 2025’s war-hungry Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Belgrade bravo
Sir, Thank you for the very insightful Postcard from Belgrade contained within your “Orthodox Special” (Eye World, issue 1644). You quote Aleksandar Vučić as saying: “I’m probably tired and overwhelmed” after actually voting correctly. My Serb wife assures me that he actually said “Umoran i potresen”, which, as any fule kno, translates as “I’m tired & emotional”. I’d get out more, however the Rakija [fruit brandy, m’lud] still keeps calling me back.
