THE first Class 18 hybrid locomotives are expected to be handed over to the customers leasing them within the next couple of months, according to their manufacturer Clayton Equipment in Burton-on-Trent.
Fifteen of the 90 tonne Bo-Bo shunters were ordered by Beacon Rail in 2020. Of a kind already in use in industrial settings (the seventh forTata Steel’s PortTalbot to the same CBD90 specification was completed in December), the aim was to break through into the mainstream rail market as a replacement for conventional diesel locomotives, such as Class 08s.
A CBD90 loco, similar in specification to the Class 18, was being prepared forTata Steel at Clayton’s factory on December 5.
