Atmospheric Icelanders eke brilliance from their bleakness
Iceland’s legacy of enthralling music continues with Dynfari’s fifth full-length since forming a decade ago. Their black metal takes flight through the post-metal guitars of the serene opening track, Dauðans dimmu dagar, which is threaded into the initial steps of Langar nætur(í botnlausum spíralstiga). Soon, though, the gruff voice of Jóhann Örn punctures the peace and the opposing forces forge a sense of uneasy harmony. Dynfari surmise that to have light you must also have darkness, and as the record progresses this becomes clearer as they journey through the soaring sorrow of Ég tortímdi sjálfum mér and the vast expanse of Peripheral Dreams. The song manoeuvres its drama through aggressive bursts of speed and contrasting mournful passages as Dynfari seek to stoke a sense of redemption from the ashes of loss.
