RAVEN
Metal City

NWOBHM diehards keep the accelerator floored
Purveyors of neck-wrecking, high-energy heavy metal for the last 46 years, Raven are one of those veteran bands that never get the respect they deserve, largely because they had the audacity to keep going, old school and blinkered to the last. Even by their own unstoppable, exuberant standards, Metal City is an explosive and exhausting affair, delivered by the Gallagher brothers (combined age: 121) and new drummer Mike Heller, whose double-kicks and blastbeats have thrown ever more fuel into the Raven engine. Frankly, it’s ridiculous that a band that formed in 1974 can sound as pumped-up and exciting as they do on The Power, recent single Top Of The Mountain, the vicious but goofy Cybertron and the Lemmy-saluting Motorheadin’. But the Geordies were always a force of nature and heavy metal this joyful and intense will never get old.
