Italian ‘brass metallers’ forge some gristle from their creative spark
Rivers Of Nihil, Sunn O))) and Imperial Triumphant may be plying their extreme metal menace with brass these days, but few bands are as committed as this Italian trio. The self-proclaimed ‘brass metal’ band have ramped up their bellicosity, a possible rub-off from recent collaborations with Cattle Decapitation. While 2018’s Apocalips showcased plenty of creative pep, there was a dearth of gristle to dig the teeth into. On DoomooD, blithe frolics are replaced by malevolent crawls and thundering tremors on horn blasts such as Coiling Of The Tubas and the broken-back lurch of End Will Come When Will Ring The Black Bells, while the cavernous trombone work on Grave emanates like a broadcast from Hell’s own cistern. Ottone Pesante manage to buoy the brass-led bedlam of Brain Tentacles with the coruscating throttle of John Zorn’s Painkiller, conjuring extreme sounds desolate, enigmatic, yet energising.
