Cranium-pounding deliverance from the doom-sludge boondocks
It’s easy to overlook that Norway’s Hymn are a mere duo. Markus Støle delivers drums that mimic hostile cannon fire and Ole Rockseth uses piano wire-thick guitar strings and an air-pushing embankment of amplification while tiptoeing on an array of effects pedals. The result is an unholy racket that lands with the subtlety of a nuke test on the purgatory between brusque stoner metal, progressive post-metal and crushing doom-sludge. Exit Through Fire takes on the clobber/caress dynamic by somehow delivering both elements simultaneously in its second half while Crimson marries a harsh rhythmic onslaught with hazy psychedelia and painful vocals, all making for a fantastic listen.
