NIGHT
High Tides - Distant Skies
THE SIGN
Swedish 70s revivalists retune their retro antennae
If you know Night’s previous album, 2017’s Raft Of The World, then High Tides -Distant Skies will be a little surprising because the band have ditched the 70s-style metal approach on that release for a more melodic, hard rock attitude. The songs draw heavily from early Scorpions, prime Thin Lizzy and classic Blue Öyster Cult - and even occasionally, as on Crimson Past, nod in the direction of Dire Straits. The dual guitarwork of Oskar Andersson and Sammy Ouirra is impressive; the pair also share vocals with a structured ease. At its best, on the strident Lost In A Dream and the galloping Under The Moonlight Sky, High Tides - Distant Skies shows Night have finally found their natural direction.
