MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE
A sorry tale
JUSTIN Plummer spent more than 27 years in prison for a brutal murder he has always denied. It took less than eight minutes for the Court of Appeal to overturn his conviction as part of the annual end-of-term deck-clearing of reserved judgments.
During the brief hearing, Lord Justice Edis, sitting with Mrs Justice McGowan and Judge Nigel Lickley KC, did not acknowledge Mr Plummer, who joined the hearing via video-link from HMP Belmarsh. There was no apology for what appears to be a clear-cut miscarriage, aggravated by an earlier exoneration and inexplicable decision to retry him. Speaking for the first time since his release on 30 July, he told the Eye: “The judgment didn’t even get read out. It was almost like they were embarrassed.”
