’s resident medic Dr Max Pemberton at the start of the month. “Giving people a label traps them,” he added. “It tells them there’s nothing they can do to change.”
Pemberton’s view was shared by his less medically qualified fellow Mail columnist Peter Hitchens, who steamed a few days later: “ADHD is a fake diagnosis that doesn’t exist.” Hitchens said he had been warning about overdiagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for years but had been ignored, so he claimed he was giving up. “Have it your way. I’ve done what I could,” he flounced.
