n THE Polari meltdown is only one of several ongoing skirmishes in publishing’s Terf wars. The fighting is fiercest in Scotland, where the SNP – which believes in gender self-identification, including for rapists – has a stranglehold on cultural life.
None of the authors of The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht, an anthology about the feminist campaign that eventually led to the Supreme Court judgment on gender, were asked to speak at the Edinburgh Book Festival, even though the book was a nationwide bestseller. Festival director Jenny Niven explained that the theme was “repair” and, sadly, gender-critical women were incapable of “progressing the conversation”.
