MORE than 1,000 EU officials are threatening to strike unless the European Commission imposes sanctions against Israel. But the commission could hardly be more stuck between a rock and a hard place. It needs the support of most EU governments to do that and, guess what, they won’t play ball.
An open letter to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, reportedly signed by more than 1,300 EU officials, urges “bold and principled action” and the use of Europe’s leverage to ensure Israel complies with international law. They predicted an “exponential” rise in starvation-related deaths if the EU doesn’t pressure Israel to allow in more aid.
