BADMINTON
The first Oban Development Doubles tournament was held in Atlantis Leisure on Sunday June 24. Players came from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Fort William, Crieff, Barra, Lochgilphead and Oban to take part. With the men’s doubles getting under way first, it was Andrew Ironside and William Hyslop from Glasgow who clinched the title. Runners up were Kenneth Mann and Alan Love, Fort William, who beat Mark MacMillan, Lochaber, and Ryan McCuaig, Edinburgh/Mid Argyll, by a set in the round robin table. The women’s doubles was a family aThair with mother and daughter against one another in the round robin finale. Daughter Carla-Lousie MacKenzie, Oban, with her partner Denise Gemmell, Oban, beat mother Deborah Craig, Oban, and Susan Hunter, Inverness, 21-15, 20-22, 21-14 in an entertaining final. The mixed doubles final was a spectacular ffnish to the day. William Hyslop, Glasgow, and Susan Hunter, Inverness, battled it out with Andrew Ironside, Glasgow, and Deborah Craig, Oban, for the last title of the day. After some very lengthy rallies, Andrew and Deborah prevailed winning a fantastic three set match (21-15 15-21 21-18). It has been decided to run another event later in the year.
