An historic castle on Mull has gone on the market. Calgary Castle, a B-listed mansion with views overlooking Calgary Bay, towards Tiree, is up for sale for offers over £695,000.
The original section of the property dates from the mid-1700s, with later extensions in the early part of the 19th century, between 1815 and 1823.It was extended in the early 1800s by Alan MacAskill, a successful merchant navy captain.
In 1876, after the library wing had been built, Colonel James MacLeod of the Canadian North West Mounted Police, stayed there and, legend has it, so enjoyed his visit (and apparently fell for the daughter of the house) that on his return to Canada, he renamed Fort Brisebois in Alberta as Fort Calgary. That later became the city of Calgary (Gaelic for beach of the meadow). Notable guests are thought to have included the author John Buchan.
