Hugh Smith.
It does feel strange to be writing a tribute for a man who was an expert at writing them, including a most thoughtful one for my wife, Valerie, after she was killed in a road accident nine years ago.
Hugh Smith was a champion of Islay, a champion of Gaelic, an understated champion of his religious faith and, primarily, a champion of his family. Born at Gruinart on Islay, Hugh was educated at Bowmore Secondary School, leaving at the age of 15, despite having the ability to progress further in his education. He worked in Islay for a number of years and was well known for his recitations at concerts and ceilidhs, as well as chairing such events. He moved to Glasgow in 1973 and worked for the city council at the City Chambers. He married his much loved wife, Netta, in 1975.
