More Roamerisms from the early 1990s
■ A French navy diving support ship is visiting Fort William next weekend. It will be at the Underwater Centre for a few days. And, of course, our councillors are due to be piped on board. So it struck me as quite unusual that a number of them have called off, saying that they – like the vessel – ‘are tied up that weekend’!
■ Recently a local resident mentioned to me that ‘Seagull City’ is ‘always last to get anything’. Last week, however, Mallaig came of age – with a ‘hole in the wall’. Ah, but the bank cash dispenser was being installed on the Sabbath – by a contractor who had special facilities which gave him access into the bank premises. However, when a number of locals congregated there for a progress report, the contractor was standing outside the bank, looking very contrite. Eventually the Mallaigites managed to extract the information that the bank door had banged shut behind the contractor – leaving him outside, and the keys inside.
