THERE’s no sugarcoating the fact the EU’s decision to slash steel imports by 47 percent from 2026 is a hammer blow to UK steel. Nearly 80 percent of all UK steel exports, 1.9 million tonnes, went to the EU last year. Now the European Commission is planning to bring quotas on imports back to 2013 levels, with US-style 50 percent tariffs once it is reached.
