You report (The Oban Times, May 17) that the Scottish Land Fund (ie, the taxpayer) has given £4.4 million to purchase the island of Ulva for the local community and I understand that local fundraising activities yielded a contribution of £37,000.
This would seem to represent a gift of around £700,000 to each of the six residents of Ulva.
The local community hopes to raise the island population to around 50. Let us hope that the existing six are happy with those who join them, as that has not always been the case elsewhere.
