Architectural gem ‘doon the watter’
Before the advent of package holidays the tiny village of Wemyss Bay was busier than the departure lounges at Glasgow Airport as holidaymakers headed for the Clyde, its beach resorts and the Isle of Bute by road, rail or steamer. Greater Glasgow escaped ‘doon the watter’ for its holidays; for day trips or longer stays.
Check out: The magnificently restored Wemyss Bay railway station and pier combined is Grade A listed - one of the finest railway buildings in Scotland and top 10 examples of railway station architecture in the UK. Wemyss Bay is still catering for tourists to this day; good places to eat and drink.
