BRUSSELS SPROUTS
FOR EU officials who spent much of 2025 lamenting Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and China’s subsidies, the return of old-fashioned farming protectionism, led by France, will have seriously dampened their Christmas cheer.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen had hoped the Brussels summit on 18 December would see the rubber-stamping of an EU trade deal with the Mercosur group of South American countries, including Argentina and Brazil. The following day, she planned to fly to Brazil for a formal signing ceremony.
