HMP Five Wells, a Northamptonshire prison run by G4S, paid the largest “poor performance” penalty of any of the country’s 13 private prisons in 2024-25, according to figures obtained by the
Eye
.
G4S paid £1.5m to the Ministry of Justice, which calls these penalties “financial remedies” rather than “fines”, even though they are imposed for poor performance against contract targets.
