WASHINGTON’s threat to end military support for Europe’s eastern flank is proving to be manna from heaven for the continent’s arms industry and beleaguered manufacturing sector.
After decades of skimping on military spending, the European Commission plans to splurge €800bn over the next 10 years to make Europe “ready” for war. Europe’s car makers, many of which were closing factories or making job cuts, now say their plants can be repurposed to build military hardware.
